From my Plano women’s investment club, here’s a quick glossary of key stock market terms related to puts, shorts, and other trading strategies:
- Bear Market (negative) – A market condition where stock prices are falling, often leading to increased short selling and put option activity.
- Bull Market (positive) – A market condition where stock prices are rising, favoring call options and long positions.
- Put Option – A contract that gives the holder the right (but not the obligation) to sell a stock at a predetermined price before a specific expiration date. Used to hedge against declines or speculate on falling prices.
- Short Selling – A strategy where an investor borrows shares, sells them at the current price, and aims to buy them back later at a lower price to profit from the decline. Risky, as losses can be unlimited if the stock price rises.
- Call Option – The opposite of a put option; it gives the holder the right to buy a stock at a set price before expiration. Used to bet on rising prices.
- Strike Price – The price at which an option contract allows the holder to buy (call) or sell (put) the underlying stock.
- Expiration Date – The last day an option contract can be exercised.
- Margin Trading – Borrowing money from a broker to trade stocks, increasing potential gains but also risks.
- Hedging – Using financial instruments like options to reduce risk exposure in a portfolio.
